Georgia maintains excellent educational opportunities for its students. For school-aged children,
there are 181 public school systems and over 2,000 schools in the Peach State. Education is
compulsory for children ages six to sixteen. There are approximately 40 charter schools and over 500
private schools in Georgia. Additionally, children may be homeschooled.
Georgia boasts a legacy of fine universities and educational institutions. Founded in 1785, the
University of Georgia (UGA), in Athens, is the Peach
State’s flagship institution for higher education, and the first state-chartered university in
America. UGA is a comprehensive land-grant and sea-grant institution enrolling over 33,000 students
and offering baccalaureate degrees in over 150 fields and master’s degrees in 128 fields, as well as
doctorate degrees in 90 areas. Additional campuses include UGA at Gwinnett, UGA at
Griffin, and UGA
at Tifton. Georgia State University, in
Atlanta, is the state’s second largest university with over 27,000 students enrolled in over 250
fields of study. Other prominent public universities include Kennesaw State University, Augusta
State University, and Savannah State University.
Renowned private universities give prestige to Georgia education. Emory University in Atlanta is home to 12,000 students and receives the most
research funding of any university in the state. Clark
Atlanta University is a comprehensive, private university with a predominantly African-American
heritage with schools in Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, and Social Work. Clark Atlanta aims
to provide education to a diverse population of students from many socioeconomic backgrounds.
Mercer University, in Macon and
Atlanta, is a faith-based private institution enrolling over 7,000 students and offering programs in
11 diversified fields of study.
Notable technical colleges in Georgia include Athens
Technical College in Athens; Central Georgia Technical College in Macon; Chattahoochee Technical College in Marietta; and Savannah Technical College, among others.
